Duncan Soule, MD is an Experienced Practitioner of Osteopathy in Portland, OR

Duncan Soule, MD has over 30 years of experience practicing osteopathy, a gentle, hands-on treatment for musculoskeletal pain, injury and dysfunction. He specializes in cranial osteopathy, which is effective in treating headaches, traumatic brain injuries, vertigo, and sinusitis.

Osteopathic treatment is ideal if you have pain, stiffness or limited mobility from a car accident, sports injury or chronic illness.  Dr. Soule uses gentle manipulation of the soft tissues to release strains and stimulate your body’s innate self-healing abilities.  The goal is not to manage your pain, but cure it completely by empowering your own self-healing ability.

Osteopathy is useful for treating:

  • Pain and stiffness from strains, accidents and injuries

  • Cognitive dysfunction from head trauma

  • Temporomandibular joint dysfunction

  • Post-partum depression

  • Sinus congestion

  • Headaches

  • Vertigo

Because the osteopathic whole-body treatment is gentle, it is ideal if you have had adverse reactions to other forms of body work. Dr. Soule’s osteopathic treatments are enhanced by his use of homeopathic remedies which also help your body heal itself.   In addition, he uses mind-body medicine approaches to help release tension and stress in the body.  This integrative approach to healthcare heals the body, mind and spirit.

What Is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a gentle hands-on treatment that powerfully mobilizes the body’s innate healing capacity. It was developed by Andrew Taylor Still, an American physician in the late 19th century. Dr. Still understood the important inter-relationship of structure and function in the body. He recognized the presence of an intelligent life force within each of us which is self-regulating and self-healing. He understood that health is expressed as freedom of motion in all the tissues and fluids of the body. In osteopathy, the role of the physician is to listen carefully to the body and assist this inherent self-healing capacity using gentle palpatory skills.

Dr. Soule specializes in the practice of cranial osteopathy, which was developed by Dr. William Garner Sutherland. Dr. Sutherland discovered a subtle fluctuation in the cranium (and throughout the body) which expresses the vibrancy and health of a person. Alterations or diminution in this natural fluid fluctuation provide important diagnostic clues to the observant physician, who then applies gentle manipulative techniques to help the body restore its healthy functioning. This powerfully effective treatment approach is useful for patients of any age and is gentle enough for infants and pregnant women.
